Clicker Training Thatcham DTC support the use of clicker training in it's classes but will not push you to use one! It is totally up to you whether you use clickers or not! Clicker training is a reward based method that has flooded the US and started to work its way strongly through the UK. Some Background: Clicker training originated with training dolphins. Obviously with dolphins you cannot use the same method that you would usually use to train another animal! The Clicker is a small box that has a button that emits a 'click' when you press it. To begin with you need to associate the click with a reward, so always make sure you have plenty of titbits at hand, just continue with your normal daily routines and every now and then just 'click' the clicker and follow it with a treat Let me give you an example. If you wanted to teach Rover to 'Sit' then you would ask him to sit and maybe 'bait' him into the sitting position as soon as he does what you ask 'click' then give him a treat. This is called 'luring'. The other way of using a clicker is 'shaping' for example, you throw a target on the floow and the dog puts its nose down to investigate it. You click and reward. You build this up slowly until each time your dog sees the target it hits its nose to it. The information above is very basic but should give you an idea of what its all about! Individual Agility Clicker training sessions start from £30 per 1 hour session |
