Sunday 14th October 2007 report on training session with Toni Dawkins.

By Yvette Cutis

Well the long awaited return of one of the countries finest handlers, came to visit us again today and we were not disappointed.

We were in the final session so I will report on this. After a long weekend of training Toni was still in good form when she had to train us for three hours. After a brief visit to the pub for lunch we set off for the venue, Toni changed a few things and we started, the group consisted of our normal Wednesday group (less a few) plus two others, oh dear would they cope with us and our shouting at each other, well they did and they fitted in very well, all the dogs were very much on the same level except Janet with her young dog who works grade 6 but hopefully we did not hold her back too much. We started with basic straight lines and all had the same comments we must still drive them on, oh dear thought me and Naomi, skate and flea didn’t really need to be driven on but after Toni explained about the more excited they are at training and get it right when they enter the show ring they should be just fine. She advised, not told us, that the harder things were at training the easier things would seem at a show,, which I suppose when you look at it is very correct. Anyway we moved on to snakes and pull throughs, yuk we all have problems with these in one way or another but I must say that they did all cope extremely well, Karen has some footage and I am sure she will allow gem to download it so you can see. After quite an intensive jump session we moved to the contacts, although Toni is a small sweet looking thing you should not be fooled, she had some evil little giggles as she made us do some of our exercises. The contact we concentrated on was the dog-walk, we did it in our normal way, then we had to hang back, great for me, we then had to recall over the equipment, not good skate didn’t like this much like a few of the others oh and then little miss evil really came in to her own, she put a tunnel at the end of the dog walk and we still had to get our position without the dog going in the tunnel, hahahaha it was fun,  a little bit of a brag here as skate actually held his position all be it his nose was in the tunnel as it was so close but  he still held it. Toni suggested we practice more of all this so the dogs get used to every eventuality We then moved on to the weaves and odd angles on to them, we have not really done much weave training recently and a few of us did actually have problems with the weaves but nothing that can’t be sorted. At the end of a hard but fun three hours we did a round, oh o.k. I got called lazy again we all know I am but I had really had enough and all the dogs were getting very tired they had lost all their oomph but they had had a long session.

To summarise the afternoon session, it was fun hard work and informative for everyone, I enjoyed it very much and I think everyone else did as well, we all left still smiling so that was a good sign. I personally would like to thank Gem and Nic for organising it and also a huge thank you to Toni for coming to us again and spending time trying to give advice and help with any little problems, I can’t wait for the next one.

Thanks Toni and Nic and Gem. Oh and thanks to skate for being a good boy as well it did help.
